Reader stories

The stories that hit hardest come from you.

If you’ve got something from a shift that could help someone else on shift feel less alone, anonymously or not, we want to read it. Every submission is read by the editor. Nothing is shared without your explicit go-ahead. Strip patient identifiers before you write.

How submissions work

Frequently asked

5 questions
  • What if I'm in crisis right now?

    Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7. First responders can also call Safe Call Now at 1-206-459-3020 for confidential peer support from current or former first responders. Both services are free.

  • Is Safe Call Now confidential?

    Yes. Safe Call Now is a 24/7 helpline staffed by current or former first responders, public-safety professionals, and mental-health providers familiar with the job. Calls are confidential and free.

  • Are these resources only for active first responders?

    988 is for anyone in crisis. Safe Call Now and Code Green Campaign are oriented toward current and former first responders, including EMS, fire, law enforcement, dispatchers, and corrections staff, plus their families. Nurses House supports nurses in financial crisis.

  • Can I share my own story anonymously?

    Yes. Submissions to CODE IV can be published under a pseudonym or anonymously. Strip patient-identifying details before you write. Every submission is read by the editor, and nothing is published without your explicit go-ahead.

  • Is this medical advice?

    No. Nothing on CODE IV is medical advice. The crisis resources listed are professional services. For clinical decisions on shift, follow your agency's protocols, your medical director, and your scope of practice.

// Share your story

If you’ve been there, tell someone else they’re not.

We publish stories anonymously unless you want otherwise. The editor is a working EMT. Every submission is read. None are shared without your explicit go-ahead.
